As we all know, the Albion Ferry is due to be shut down July 31st, 2009.

The staff on these two ferries have taken an incredible amount of verbal abuse over the years, especially from cage drivers. Often, they have been waiting for several sailings only to have a few motorcyclists ride up and get boarded on the next boat. After we leave, the crap starts ....

I'm going to suggest that, between now and the end of July, we each make a point of thanking the ferry staff. Tell them that their courtesy has been appreciated by every one of us. Remember that they're all losing their jobs too. Sure, some are being "relocated" within TransLink, but it's still a big upheaval.

Personally, I've always made it a point to say, "Thank you" to the staff whenever I'm on the bike. Right now, it's so much more important .....

That's a great idea! Having never waited for a sailing at the cagers expense a simple thank you is the least we can do.

Cool Thanks, Gord. Where's that bridge, in relation to the Ferry's location?
Since not privy to that area, haven't been following developments
but great to see a bridge happening!  Undecided

Yesterday, I had quite a chat with a few of the Albion Ferry dock staff. It seems that when the shut-down happens (July 31st), all 75 employees are out of a job. No bumping rights, no relocation assurances .... nothing.

Evidently, when Trans-Link took the ferries over from the Provincial Highways Ministry, the BCGEU signed away all their rights in favour of the next contract with Trans-Link. Two that I was talking with, one with 31 years and the other with 28 years service, were looking at enforced "retirement".

All I can say is it's a pretty damn tough deal. You might consider this if you do take the opportunity to thank them .....
